The Kelowna General Hospital Foundation has received an unexpected $900,000 donation.
The gift, designated for cardiac care at the hospital, was left to the foundation in the will of Edith Caroline Graham, who died April 28 at the age of 96.
The foundation did not know it would be receiving this money until a notice was received from the estate lawyer.
Graham had many family members with cardiac problems which was her motivation to support cardiac care at KGH, said Diane Paterson, gift planning officer for the foundation.
"The Kelowna General Hospital Foundation is honoured to receive this very generous bequest," said Paterson. "We are working with Edith's family to ensure her gift is recognized in a manner she so richly deserves."
Graham moved to Kelowna in 1986 where she lived at the Wedgewood Retirement home for many years.
She received her teacher's training in Moose Jaw, Sask., but moved to B.C. in 1945, receiving her master's degree in education at UBC. Most of her teaching career was spent at Richmond Senior Secondary School. She retired in 1981 after 45 years of teaching.
